If Windows says “No Internet, secured”, your computer has successfully connected to a secured Wi-Fi network, but Windows cannot confirm a working internet connection through it.
The confusing word is “secured”. It does not mean your internet connection is working or that Windows has confirmed everything is okay. It simply describes the Wi-Fi connection the computer has joined.
In simple terms:
Secured = the Wi-Fi connection is protected.
No Internet = the computer cannot currently reach the internet through that connection.
The next useful question is whether the problem affects only that Windows computer or every device using the same Wi-Fi. That distinction usually tells you which side of the connection needs attention.

What does “No Internet, secured” actually mean?
When Windows connects to Wi-Fi, there are several separate things happening.
The computer first has to find the wireless network, authenticate with it and establish a connection to the modem, router or wireless access point.
A successful local connection might look like this:
Computer -> Wi-Fi -> Router
Windows can describe that Wi-Fi connection as secured because the network is using wireless security and the computer has successfully joined it.
But the complete path needed for internet access is longer:
Computer -> Wi-Fi -> Router -> Internet
If something prevents the computer from completing the rest of that path, Windows can quite correctly report both conditions at the same time:
- 🔒 Secured: the computer has joined the protected Wi-Fi network.
- 🌐 No Internet: Windows cannot reach the internet through that connection.
There is therefore no contradiction in the message. The Wi-Fi connection can be working while internet access through it is not.
“Secured” does not mean the internet connection is secure or working
It is easy to read “secured” as reassurance that Windows has checked the whole connection. It has not.
The word refers to the wireless network itself. In a normal home network, this usually means the Wi-Fi is protected using a security method such as WPA2 or WPA3 rather than being an open network that anybody nearby can join without authentication.
It tells you nothing about whether:
- 🌍 The modem or router currently has internet access.
- 🔢 The computer has received the correct IP address and gateway information.
- 🔎 DNS is working correctly.
- 🛡️ A VPN, proxy, firewall or security program is interfering with traffic.
- 📡 The Wi-Fi adapter and its Windows driver are behaving normally.
- 🔌 The router still has a working connection to the NBN or internet provider.
“No Internet, secured” is therefore a symptom description rather than a diagnosis.
The most useful test is another device
Before changing Windows settings, check whether another phone, tablet or computer can access the internet through the same Wi-Fi network.
- 💻 Only the Windows computer has no internet: the modem and internet connection are probably working, so attention should shift toward that computer or its interaction with the Wi-Fi network.
- 📱 Your phone works normally on the same Wi-Fi: this is strong evidence that you are dealing with a computer-specific problem. See why Wi-Fi can work on your phone but not your laptop or computer.
- 🏠 Nothing in the house has internet: the modem/router, NBN connection, internet provider or another whole-network fault becomes much more likely.
- 🔀 Some devices work and others do not: there may be a compatibility, addressing, Wi-Fi configuration, mesh or device-specific issue rather than a complete outage.
If you use a phone for this comparison, make sure it really is using the home Wi-Fi. A smartphone can silently continue using 4G or 5G mobile data and make a failed home internet connection appear to be working.
If other devices work, the problem is probably closer to the Windows computer
If another device can use the same internet connection normally, a general NBN or ISP outage becomes much less likely.
The Windows computer has then become the main variable.
Common causes include:
- 📶 Saved Wi-Fi profile problems: Windows may be holding old or damaged information for the wireless network.
- 🔢 IP or DHCP problems: the computer may not have received suitable network addressing from the router.
- 🚪 Incorrect gateway information: the computer may be connected locally but not know the correct path out to the internet.
- 🔎 DNS problems: the network may be connected while the computer cannot correctly translate website names into internet addresses.
- 📡 Wi-Fi adapter or driver problems: Windows may be connected to the network but the wireless adapter is not operating correctly.
- 🛡️ VPN, proxy or security software: software on the computer can interrupt internet traffic without actually disconnecting Wi-Fi.
- ⚙️ Windows networking configuration: damaged or incorrect network settings can leave the computer connected locally but unable to get online.
The important point is that none of these faults requires the entire home internet connection to be broken.
A saved Wi-Fi connection can be connected but still behave incorrectly
Windows remembers information about wireless networks it has previously joined. Usually this makes reconnecting automatic, but the saved profile can occasionally become part of the problem.
This is particularly worth considering if the symptom began after the modem or router was replaced, the Wi-Fi security settings changed, the network name was reused on new equipment, or Windows has been repeatedly disconnected and reconnected while troubleshooting.
Disconnecting and reconnecting to Wi-Fi is a sensible early test. If necessary, forgetting the saved network and joining it again can force Windows to establish a fresh wireless profile.
However, if other devices work and reconnecting makes no difference, repeatedly deleting and recreating the Wi-Fi connection is unlikely to fix an IP, DNS, driver, VPN or other Windows problem.
Windows may be connected to Wi-Fi but have the wrong network information
Joining the wireless network is only part of the process. The computer also needs suitable network information so it knows how to communicate with the router and where to send internet traffic.
In most home networks, the router provides this automatically using DHCP.
“No Internet, secured” can appear when the Wi-Fi connection succeeds but the computer has incorrect or unusable:
- 🔢 IP address information.
- 🚪 Default gateway information.
- 🔎 DNS configuration.
- 📌 Manual network settings left over from another connection.
This is why a Windows computer can appear to be connected perfectly to the same router every other device is using while still being unable to reach the internet.
VPNs, proxies and security software can cause the same message
Not every “No Internet, secured” problem is caused by Wi-Fi.
A VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus product, web filter or other network software can interrupt traffic after the wireless connection has already been established.
This is especially relevant when the problem began immediately after installing, updating, removing or changing one of those programs.
If a VPN is normally used, temporarily disconnecting it is a useful comparison. What is less useful is disabling every security feature and changing multiple network settings simultaneously, because that makes it difficult to identify which change actually affected the connection.
If every device has no internet, look beyond Windows
If phones, tablets, televisions and other computers have also lost internet access through the same network, the Windows message is probably only reporting a wider problem.
The computer may be connected correctly to the router while the router itself has lost its external internet connection.
In that case:
Computer -> Wi-Fi -> Router
may be working while:
Router -> NBN or ISP -> Internet
is not.
Possible causes then include the modem/router, connection between the router and NBN equipment, ISP configuration, an upstream outage or another fault affecting the whole network.
Restarting the modem or router once can be a reasonable test. A factory reset is a very different step and should not be the automatic response to a “No Internet, secured” message.
Windows can occasionally say “No Internet” even when internet access works
The Windows status message is useful, but it should not be treated as more important than what the computer can actually do.
If websites, email and other online services are working normally even though Windows still reports “No Internet”, the connection may not actually be offline.
Windows performs its own connectivity checks to decide what status to display. Those checks can occasionally be affected by DNS, VPNs, filtering software, captive portals or temporary network conditions.
In that situation, the problem may be Windows detecting the connection incorrectly rather than the internet connection itself being unavailable.
If nothing online works as well as Windows showing “No Internet, secured”, the message is much more likely to reflect a genuine connectivity problem.
What to check before doing a complete Windows network reset
A few comparisons usually provide more useful information than immediately resetting the entire network stack.
- 1️⃣ Check another device. Find out whether the problem is limited to this Windows computer.
- 2️⃣ Confirm the Wi-Fi network. Make sure the computer is connected to the intended home network rather than a guest network, extender or old Wi-Fi name.
- 3️⃣ Restart the affected computer. This is a low-risk way to clear a temporary adapter or Windows networking problem.
- 4️⃣ Reconnect to Wi-Fi. Disconnecting and reconnecting can establish whether the current wireless session is simply stuck.
- 5️⃣ Think about what changed. A Windows update, new router, VPN, security product or network change can provide an important clue.
- 6️⃣ Try another network if practical. If the laptop works through a phone hotspot but not the home Wi-Fi, that comparison helps narrow the fault considerably.
These checks preserve the working configuration while giving you evidence about where the failure actually sits.
Do not turn one Windows error into several new problems
There is a large amount of troubleshooting advice online for “No Internet, secured”, much of it involving command-line resets, DNS changes, driver removal and complete network resets.
Those tools have legitimate uses, but applying all of them without first narrowing the fault can make diagnosis harder.
- ⚠️ Do not factory-reset a working modem or router merely because one Windows computer says “No Internet, secured”.
- ⚠️ Do not change DNS, IP, proxy, firewall and Wi-Fi settings simultaneously.
- ⚠️ Do not uninstall a Wi-Fi driver without knowing how the correct driver will be restored.
- ⚠️ Do not assume Windows needs a complete network reset before determining whether the failure is actually in Windows.
The objective is not to perform the greatest number of resets. It is to identify which part of the connection is failing and change only what needs changing.
