Wi-Fi Works on My Phone but Not My Laptop or Computer

If Wi-Fi works on your phone but not your laptop or computer, you have already discovered one of the most useful clues in troubleshooting the problem. If another device can use the same internet connection normally, a general NBN or internet provider outage becomes much less likely.

The problem has been narrowed considerably. Instead of treating the whole internet connection as broken, attention can shift toward the affected computer, the way it is connecting to Wi-Fi, or software and network settings on that device.

Another working device is an important diagnostic clue

When your phone can browse websites and use online apps through the same home Wi-Fi while the laptop cannot, several parts of the connection are already proven to be working.

The phone has successfully travelled through this path:

Phone -> Wi-Fi -> Router -> Internet

That means the router has at least some working internet access and is capable of providing it to a connected device.

The failed path is narrower:

Laptop -> Wi-Fi -> Router -> Internet

Something affecting that particular computer may be preventing it from completing the same journey.

This does not prove that the router is completely innocent. Routers can behave differently with different devices, wireless bands or security settings. However, it substantially reduces the likelihood that the entire NBN or ISP service is simply offline.

First make sure the phone is really using Wi-Fi

Before changing anything on the computer, confirm that the working phone is actually using the home Wi-Fi rather than silently falling back to its mobile data connection.

This is particularly important with smartphones because they can remain online through 4G or 5G even when the Wi-Fi connection itself has stopped providing internet access.

The computer may still show the network name and even report that it is connected while the saved configuration is no longer working correctly.

A sensible early test is to disconnect from the Wi-Fi and reconnect. If that changes nothing, forgetting the saved network and joining it again with the correct password can rebuild the wireless profile without resetting the entire computer or router.

Computer-specific DNS problems can be caused by manually entered settings, VPN software, security software or configuration left behind by previous troubleshooting.

It is tempting to respond by immediately replacing the DNS servers with addresses suggested online. Sometimes that changes the symptom, but it is better to determine whether DNS is actually the failing part of the connection before changing more settings.

The Wi-Fi adapter or driver may be the problem

If the phone works but the laptop does not, the laptop’s wireless adapter becomes another likely place to investigate.

The adapter is the hardware inside the computer that communicates with the wireless network. Windows also depends on a driver to control that hardware correctly.

Possible problems include:

The exact troubleshooting steps differ between Windows and macOS, which is another reason it is better to diagnose the failed layer before applying generic reset instructions.

Try the computer on another internet connection

One of the most useful tests is to connect the affected laptop to another known-working network.

A phone hotspot can be particularly useful because it creates an entirely separate internet connection for comparison.

If phones, tablets, televisions and other computers are all using the internet normally, a factory reset of the modem or router is rarely a sensible first response.

It can remove working Wi-Fi and internet configuration from every device while leaving the original computer problem unresolved.

The working phone is valuable precisely because it gives you a known-good comparison. Troubleshooting should use that evidence rather than destroying the working configuration and starting again.

When the router can still be responsible

Although another working device shifts suspicion strongly toward the affected computer, it does not completely rule out the modem or router.

A particular laptop can still have trouble because of wireless compatibility, security settings, access controls, address allocation or the way a mesh or extender system handles that device.

This becomes more likely when the computer works perfectly on other Wi-Fi networks but repeatedly fails only on the home network.

In that situation, both sides of the connection may need to be compared: the computer’s network configuration and the router settings it is trying to use.
