If your Wi-Fi says connected but there is no internet, the Wi-Fi connection itself may be working normally. Your computer, phone or other device has successfully joined the local wireless network, but something further along the path to the internet is failing.
The easiest way to understand the problem is to separate the connection into stages:
Device -> Wi-Fi -> Router -> Internet
Your device can complete the first two stages while the last one is broken. That is why you can have full Wi-Fi bars, a connected symbol and even access to other devices in the home while websites and online services still do not work.

What connected to Wi-Fi actually means
When a laptop or phone reports that it is connected to Wi-Fi, it is confirming a connection to a wireless access point, usually your modem, router or mesh system.
It is not necessarily confirming that the router itself can reach the internet.
For example, this part may be working perfectly:
Laptop -> Wi-Fi -> Router
while this part is failing:
Router -> NBN or ISP -> Internet
The same distinction applies when people say they have strong Wi-Fi but no internet. The Wi-Fi signal only tells you how well the device can communicate with the nearby router or access point. It does not measure whether that equipment has a working internet connection beyond it.
The fastest test is another device
Before changing network settings, check whether another phone, tablet or computer can use the same Wi-Fi connection.
- π» Only one device fails: The internet connection and router are probably working, so the problem is more likely to be inside that computer, phone or its network configuration.
- π± Your phone works but the laptop does not: The fault is much more likely to be specific to the laptop or computer than to the household internet connection.
- π Every device fails: The modem/router, NBN connection, internet provider or another whole-network problem becomes much more likely.
- π Some devices work and others do not: Look for device configuration, Wi-Fi compatibility, mesh or extender behaviour, network addressing or software affecting only particular devices.
This simple comparison is more useful than immediately restarting or resetting everything because it tells you which side of the network deserves attention.
If only one device has no internet
If other devices are online through the same Wi-Fi, a general NBN or ISP outage is unlikely to be the main problem.
The affected device may still be connected to the router but unable to use that connection correctly.
Possible causes include:
- πΆ A damaged or stale saved Wi-Fi profile.
- π’ Incorrect IP address, gateway or DHCP information.
- π A DNS problem preventing website names from resolving.
- π‘οΈ A VPN, proxy, firewall or security program interfering with network traffic.
- βοΈ A Wi-Fi adapter, driver or Windows networking problem.
- π A compatibility problem between that device and the router’s wireless or security settings.
Start with low-risk tests. Disconnect and reconnect the Wi-Fi, restart the affected device and temporarily disconnect any VPN that you deliberately use. If possible, try the device on another known-working network or a phone hotspot.
If the computer works normally through another network, that is useful evidence. The computer can reach the internet, but something about its connection to the home network is failing.
If every device is connected but nothing has internet
If phones, computers and tablets all connect to the Wi-Fi but none of them can reach the internet, changing settings on one laptop is unlikely to solve the problem.
The likely fault has moved further along the connection path.
Check:
- π‘ Whether the modem or router shows an internet, WAN, DSL or connection warning light.
- π Whether the modem/router and any separate NBN equipment are powered and connected as they normally are.
- π Whether one controlled restart of the modem/router restores service.
- π‘ Whether an extender or mesh system is involved and the devices are connecting through a node that has lost its upstream connection.
- π’ Whether your internet provider is reporting an outage or account problem, using mobile data to check if necessary.
A modem or router can continue broadcasting a perfectly strong Wi-Fi network even after its internet connection has disappeared. That is why restarting the laptop repeatedly may make no difference in a whole-house failure.
Why full Wi-Fi bars do not prove the internet is working
The Wi-Fi indicator measures the wireless connection between your device and the access point it has joined.
If you are sitting next to the router, that signal can be excellent even when the router has no internet connection whatsoever.
Mesh systems and Wi-Fi extenders can make the symptom even more confusing. A laptop may have a very strong connection to a nearby mesh node or extender while that device has lost its own connection back to the main router.
In that situation, the local wireless link is strong but the route beyond it is broken.
This is why moving closer to the router is useful when the Wi-Fi signal itself is weak, but it is not a universal fix for a device that already has full bars and no internet.
Sometimes the internet is working but one part of it is not
Before treating the connection as completely dead, check what actually fails.
If one website will not open but others work, the home internet connection is probably not the problem. The website itself, browser or a filtering service may be responsible.
If websites fail but another internet-based application continues working, DNS, browser settings, a proxy or security software may be involved.
If nothing online works on the affected device while other household devices remain normal, the fault again points toward that particular device rather than the internet service as a whole.
The more precisely you identify what still works, the less troubleshooting has to be done by guesswork.
What not to reset before you know where the fault is
When the internet is down, it is tempting to work through every reset command and settings change suggested online. That can make a simple fault harder to identify.
- β οΈ Do not factory-reset the modem or router as the first troubleshooting step.
- β οΈ Do not change DNS, IP, DHCP, firewall and Wi-Fi settings all at once.
- β οΈ Do not remove working network software or drivers merely because Wi-Fi shows connected without internet.
- β οΈ Do not assume the modem needs replacing until you know whether the fault affects one device or the whole network.
A factory reset can also remove ISP or Wi-Fi configuration that was previously correct, leaving you with the original problem plus a router that now needs to be configured again.
How to narrow the fault before doing anything complicated
A useful diagnosis usually comes from a few simple observations:
- 1οΈβ£ Check another device. This separates many computer problems from whole-network problems immediately.
- 2οΈβ£ Check what still works. One failed website is different from every online service failing.
- 3οΈβ£ Notice where you are connected. Confirm whether the device is using the main Wi-Fi, guest Wi-Fi, a mesh node or an extender.
- 4οΈβ£ Look at the modem/router. A working Wi-Fi light does not necessarily mean its internet or WAN connection is working.
- 5οΈβ£ Think about what changed. A new modem, Windows update, VPN, power outage or network change can provide an important clue.
Those checks usually tell you whether to keep investigating the individual device or move outward toward the router and internet connection.
When to call your internet provider
Your ISP becomes the more likely next call when every device has lost internet access, the modem/router shows that its external connection is down, there is a confirmed outage, or the service itself has an account or provisioning problem.
NBN infrastructure faults, carrier outages and upstream service failures ultimately need to be repaired by the responsible provider.
The difficulty is that those symptoms can look very similar to a faulty router or incorrectly configured home network. A modem can broadcast Wi-Fi normally while having no usable internet connection, and a local router problem can also make every device appear offline.
Get help finding where the connection is failing
